Pumpkin Chunkin'
My brother's Trebuchet
My brother and his friends were involved with a Pumpkin Chunkin'
contest at Alliance High School.  The objective of a Pumpkin
Chunkin' contest is to shoot an 8-10 pound pumpkin as far as you
can.  So I helped them build a trebuchet.  A trebuchet uses
gravitational potential energy and converts it to Kinetic Energy to
launch the pumpkin.  Their trebuchet used a 12 foot long beam and
350 pounds of counterweight.  In the competition you can see many
different entries from catapults, air cannons, ballistas, slingshots, as
well as trebuchets.  The furthest shot was by an air cannon (though
not officially in the competition), my brothers trebuchet shot the
pumpkin 87.5 meters (about 288 feet).   I have videos of the contest
that I digitally edited, below.  There are two different qualities choose
according to your Internet connection.  (Their trebuchet is the one to
fire after  the air cannon and the one that shows the details after the
first firing sequence)
