Project DSM rebuild
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Here I will be keeping a diary of sorts with helpful "how-to's" and what not of the rebuilding and build up of the Talon. I will try and post whenever I have made progress.

August 2004- 1991 Eagle Talon TSI All-Wheel-Drive acquired. Spun rod-bearing on 1st Cylinder. Will not shift into 2nd gear. Various bits missing or broken. The fun begins... Determined the crankshaft would either need resurfacing or replaced, the bearing that came out of the 1st cylinder was quite beat up, near foil like. Transmission condition unknown. Reassembled the interior.

December 26, 2004- Fall semester finally over, I finally have time and money to begin real work on the Talon. After some serious searching on the Internet and phone book I finally decided that rebuilding the engine was the best choice for my money. I looked at buying a used JDM engine some places offered very competitive prices that included transmissions and some even with transfer cases and turbos. However I want the Talon to run as long as possible with the fewest problems and running higher than stock boost levels, the plan is for a super daily driver (perhaps super car beating someday :-) ) I also searched for already rebuilt long blocks but some slick salesman type, tried to work there magic on me unknowing that I was once a salesman myself, ( a few bait and switch types), a few had no idea even what I was talking about when I said "4G63" this lead me to believe that perhaps they weren't as knowledgeable as I would hope about the engine they were charging alot of money for rebuilding ($1100-2500). From there I decided perhaps I would look to some experts on 4g63 engines, I called several of the usual supsects, however it was obvious many of them would either A) not mess around with a simple rebuild when they could charge more for upgraded engines (which I couldn't afford) or B) were looking to finance a racecar by the looks of the prices I got for quotes ($3500-5000) I then stumbled across Shepherd Racing on the web. Shepherd campaigns the fastest full bodied/ full interior DSM that I am aware of at this time (8.71@ 166.25MPH) pretty impressive for a four-cylinder :-) Shepherd Racing seemed to have very reasonable prices on rebuilds for transmission and they claimed to do other work on their website. What really pleased me was that they are located very near to my house in North Lawrence, Ohio (about 30 mins from my home in Alliance) One trip to Shepherd convinced me that these are the kind of guys I don't mind dumping money on an engine for and their prices were very very affordable. Currently they have my block and head and are machining and reconditioning both.

Here is looking down on the bottom of the engine. If you click on the picture to the left, I have a picture that highlights some of the strong points of the 4g63 bottom end that allow it to handle lots of boost and several hundred horsepower without modification.

1/10/05 Shepherd Racing called last Thursday to tell me the block and head were finished. Picked them up on Friday, both look incredible, almost brand new, compared to the condition then went out in. I also picked up the new lifters they ordered me with bigger diameter holes to help prevent that clacking that the lifters making on so many early DSM's. I will be ordering Shepherds Balance shaft eliminator kit here... Which surprise, surprise is not a rip off like a lot of places try to do. They straight told me that they could either give me the Mitsubishi part numbers to take to a Mitsubishi dealer, or they could order it from a local Mitsu dealer.. Not sure which route I will go but will be cheaper than most Balance Shaft elim. kits I have priced I am sure. I will be taking the transmission to Shepherd here in the next week or so. I am ordering the other engine parts I need tomorrow, basically gaskets, belts, rings, pistons, etc. Check out the pictures of the refinished parts.

*TIP* Because I live in a humid environment even in the winter, I have been spraying down the block with WD40 once a day, until i get the engine assembled and sealed up. The freshly machined surface of the block would rust in like 2 seconds if left unprotected, it is unnecessary to spray off the head because it is aluminum and won't rust. Shepherd Racing recommends this treatment as well.
